MFA Department of Photo, Video and Related Media.
The Master of Fine Arts Department of Photo, Video and Related Media makes its home on the ground floor of SVAâs âPhoto Building,â sharing the facility with a much larger undergraduate student body. Formerly separated from the street by three abandoned loading bays, vestiges of the buildingâs industrial past, MFA Photo/Video had for years hoped to raise its visible profile to match its academic prestige. As the renovation began to take shape with the help of Spacesmith, the Department had one central goal: project MFA Photo/Videoâs presence onto the streetscape.
Spacesmith focused on maximizing the opportunity to extend the department through the disused loading docks, taking advantage of the extra height, light and connection to the street. A grand new volume became the centerpiece of the expansion. Able to accommodate large lectures, be split into smaller classrooms, and function as both a gallery and casual social area, the MFA Photo/Video Department now has a new space to match its public facing ambitions.
The renovation also reconfigured the academic and production areas of the department, updating the infrastructure to better suit modern imaging practices. Rebalancing the spatial program yielded a new mix of public and social spaces.
